A few weeks back our son-in-law remarked "a BTU is a BTU, pretty much any way you turn it" (He's an HVAC contractor) and I think that's pretty much what you're saying, as well. The actual savings lie in efficiency — much like a convection vs. conventional oven — and in the newer generation of split systems that allow you to only heat the spaces you're actually using, when you're using them.
