Black sand tends to be a good sign.

Last time we were out at the Pacific coast I came across a couple of "beach miners" who had their sluices set up and were collecting buckets of black sand from certain spots on the beach. Evidently a LOT of heavy lifting and post processing once they get home, but the guy said they sometimes 4-5 grams out of a weekend's work.
