I can totally buy into the idea that the virus was inadvertently set loose from the lab as a result of slack control systems, and then the whole thing went haywire. They were just studying it, and someone goofed up.

One of the truisms I've long subscribed to (since my college days, really) is "don't attribute to malice what can be attributed to ignorance and carelessness." I think that applies here...
