So... the midterm elections in the USA have been and gone. Not sure what that actually means for the average person, but I guess time will tell.
Whether you like the outcome or not, it seems like there's little doubt that the electorate was ready for a change of some sort. Let's hope the change turns out to be what people actually put their hopes on it being.
What struck me in the weeks leading up to the actual Election Day was the broad lack of understanding of many of the issues that people displayed. While I realize it is pretty common practice for politics to run campaigns based on misinformation and fear mongering, I do find it a little alarming how few people actually take the time to dig into claims made rather than just take them at face value and go off on a mad caper of flag waving.
Ironically — but perhaps not surprisingly — in the current state of post game analysis, an equally large number of people seem to have very little idea of what they actually just voted for or against.
And so, the same finger pointing that ran wild before election day continues to thrive post election day.
Misunderstanding and misinformation seems to be a far more common occurrence than anybody actually having a clue and, moreover, taking enough of an interest in actually developing a clue rather than just regurgitating something they saw on social media or on TV seems like a rarity.
When did people get to be so ignorant? Moreover, when did people start to take pride in their own ignorance... like having a forceful opinion is a superior approach than actually knowing the facts?
Yesterday, I did briefly speak to a couple of my cousins back in Denmark and they seemed almost relieved... like this one event somehow means that the people of the US have somehow regained a measure of common sense and rationality. Not sure about that, but nice sentiment.
Still, not sure that makes them any better informed than people here...
I have an uneasy feeling that in spite of all the calls for change, the status quo will continue, just wearing a different uniform. That said, with the substantial inflow of "fresh new faces" there does seem to be some rising pushback against the presumption that "old guard Democrats" will run the Houses... and that has to be a positive.
Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!
