This is a topic I have covered many times in the past, but after having created the Hive Power World Map, searching through the pins and seeing how people actually present their location has allowed me to improve my queries and increase coverage of active users in a particular country. It doesn't change the usual caveats, that this is a small subset of users who actually set their location, location can be fictional and that a single user can have multiple accounts, but it does mean that my queries now will capture users who had been missed in my previous graphs and posts.
There are now 5 Spanish-speaking countries in the top 20 for active users on Hive, and also 5 of the top 20 countries are present in Latin America. The chart below highlights Spanish-speaking countries in red. Portuguese-speaking Brazil is also highlighted in green.
One way of looking at activity is in the use of tags. 'spanish' has become the most popular tag on the network overall, and although not all Spanish-language posts use it, nor do all posts tagged 'spanish' represent a Spanish-speaking author, it still is a good proxy for measuring the activity of the Hispanic community on Hive.
The overall activity of Spanish-speaking authors is increasing again in Hive, as can be seen by the first chart below. However, in March this has just been in line with an increasing number of posts in general, as it can also be seen that the ratio of posts tagged 'spanish' to the total number of posts did not increase.
We can also observe the number of posts that tag the country, as an alterative proxy metric for a national group.
There was a concerted effort to start tagging posts with "cuba" in recent weeks, which in part explains the surge. However the Cuban community does seem to be growing, as can be seen in other corroborating data.
Using the improved queries mentioned at the start, here are active authors and curators per month, for locations mentioning Venezuela and Cuba in their profiles.
Curiously, Venezuelan authors declined while curators increased. Perhaps there is a trend of authors transitioning to curators as they grow in Hive Power? It will require further examination, but included is a simple chart of their ratio for now.
For Cuban Hivers, they reached new highs in March for both authors and curators.
