I've always been self-employed which meant my income was often unpredictable. During Ireland's financial crash in the 1990s for example, I was unable to pay myself a penny for over six months and I was never a saver, so I had little to fall back on. I'm fortunate that my upbringing with two alcoholic parents taught me the virtues of frugality:)
