This is history in the making. It’s the first time in DPOS and blockchain that witnesses (or their analogue) has stood up to large stake.

I too was very concerned about the fork, particularly with regard to compromising the meaning of stake altogether, but I don’t believe that the witnesses could justify doing it again. It’s the unfairly ninja mined stake that is the central issue.
