I had some good time while I was in kano and thought to share with you all. Kano is in the northern part of Nigeria. Its a beautiful and adventourous place to be.
For the first time in my life I left the shores of port Harcourt the garden city, to travel to Kano for my national youth service program 12 years ago.
National youth service corp(NYSC) is a mandatory one year program for all graduates under the age of 30 in Nigeria. So immediately you finish your university degree, you have to go for the one year program. This program was initiated by my country to improve diversity of culture. For instance, people who finished schooling in the south or east, will be sent to the North or west for this programme and vice versa.
When i saw my call up letter, i was excited that i was leaving my south-south to the North. It was a long journey of about 14hours by road, my longest trip by road ever. This trip availed me the opportunity to see the beautiful weather and cities in my country nigeria.
We traveled all through the night to get to Kano. It was a wonderful experience meeting people from different parts of nigeria, with different cultures and languages.
The weather in kano was mostly hot. Hotter than where I came from and when its cold , it was very cold , more than Port Harcourt my city. They have so many foods also. Quite different from what we have in the south. My favorite was fura di nunu.( Made from cow milk and wheat). It's very sweet and norishing. Where I lived was a purely Muslim community, I lived in an area called Ajingi, which was two hours away from the city. Ajingi is in the rural area of the state.
You won't believe that as big as this Local government is, you can't find a single church. The indigenes almost burnt our lodge the day we tried doing our Christain prayers in our corpers lodge. We were warned in strong terms after the village heads intervention never to repeat it again or leave the community. That day was horrific for me. I was scared to my teeth.
Alcohol was highly prohibited as we were told.. But guess what? smoking wasn't a crime (hahaha). Ironic right?.
During my stay, I was giving an award of excellence by the Catholic Church I attended which was situated at the next local government.
I had to always travel two hours twice a week to go-to church because that was where the only church was situated. I am an Anglican but I had to choose the Catholic Church because that was the only option and I believe that the body of Christ is one. I contributed immersely to the church growth
. We were not much by the way. At the end of my one year youth service corps, I was given gifts for my service and activeness towards the body of Christ. I hope to hear and see also that a church has been built in Ajingi local government area one day.
During my stay, I joined the road safety club and I also helped in immunization of the children. It was really a wonderful one year experience that I can never forget in a life time.
I will also add that the Ajingi people are really hospitable. They always gave us good food during their Muslim celebrations and tried to convince us to join Islam too with their gifts and preachings.
Ajingi is a community known for its agricultural produce and peaceful nature. They love strangers who obey their rules and respect their religions and women too.
At the end of my one year youth service corps, it was really hard for me to go back to the state I came from.
Till date, I miss their meals. I hope to be back one day.
