In the Mahabharata it is told that Gandari, the wife of Dretarastra, wanted a son. Then Gandari pleaded with Byasa, a powerful ascetic, and he granted it. Gandari became pregnant, but after a long time she was pregnant, her son was not yet born. He became jealous of Kunti who had given Pandu three sons. Gandari became frustrated and then pounded his womb.

After going through labor, born from her womb is just a lump of meat. Byasa then cut the meat into a hundred pieces and put it into a jar, which is then planted into the ground for a year. After one year, the jars are reopened and from inside each jar, a baby boy emerges. The first to appear was Duryodana, accompanied by the Dursasana, and his other brother.

All the sons of Dretarastra grew into a man of dashing. They had a sibling named Pandavas, the five sons of Pandu, their father's half-brother.

Although they were brothers, Duryodana, who was the eldest brother of the Kauravas, always felt jealous of the Pandavas, especially Yudhisthira who was about to be nominated to be king in Hastinapura. Disputes arise and culminate in a great battle in Kurukshetra.

After a fierce fight for eighteen days, a hundred Dretarastra sons died, including his grandchildren, except for Yuyutsu, the son of Dretarastra born of a lady-waiter. The last one killed in the battle is Duryodana, the eldest brother of the Kauravas.

Previously, his sister named Dursasana who died at the hands of Bima. Yuyutsu is the only son of Dretarastra who survived a fierce fight in Kurukshetra for siding with the Pandavas and he continued his father's lineage, and made a ceremony for his ancestors.
