Some of the creators of this series were also involved in a extremely popular series from 15 years ago or so called Lost so the minds behind this story surely have enough creativity to produce an entertaining plot. Its main actor, Harold Perrineau who plays the Sheriff, even had an important role in Lost as well.
I remember watching the first season of Lost and being super intrigued by it, but as many people would probably relate, eventually I stopped watching it and never returned to it. But I do remember enjoying the first 2 or 3 seasons back in those years.
From takes place in a small town which caused me a very eerie feeling the first time I watched it. I have said many times that small towns can be great settings for stories with mysteries and horror, not only due to their occasional isolated feeling but also because it becomes easier to map out the key characters and the relationships with each other. Small towns can be much more intimate and it can make the story feel more authentic, at least for my taste.
Something about its settings reminded me a little bit of Silent Hill, which is the horror franchise I have been expecting the most to return. I don't understand why in this era full of remakes, reboots, spin-offs, etc, Silent Hill hasn't come back yet. Its universe is easily rich enough to justify an epic comeback.
But anyway, back to From, the series makes it very clear this town has something strange about it, and it does an excellent job making the viewer constantly feel creeped out by it. I am not exaggerating when I say this town is the eeriest setting I have seen in any fictional production in the past few months. I absolutely loved the work they did when the creators thought about this place and how to make it mysterious and creepy while at the same time keeping an apparent natural look in some moments as if nothing weird was present. This contrast was beautiful.
The very beginning of the series already shows this isn't a normal town with common customs. The Silent Hill feeling is already there from the beginning, and I was surprised to see this series revealing the big threat in the first scene. This isn't usually the case, but I liked it this way because I thought that meant the rest of the season was going to be about exploring the origins behind this paranormal threat, this however, wasn't entirely the case.
Bu the way, when I make a comparison to Silent Hill, it is mostly because of the fact the paranormal threat doesn't haunt a single house or person or family, but the whole town. Plus, the town also has a type of daily sinister event that's similar to what happens in Silent Hill.

He dicho muchas veces que los pueblos pequeños pueden ser grandes escenarios para historias de misterio y terror, no solo por su sensación ocasional de aislamiento, sino también porque se vuelve más fácil mapear a los personajes clave y las relaciones entre ellos. Los pueblos pequeños pueden ser mucho más íntimos y pueden hacer que la historia se sienta más auténtica, al menos para mi gusto.

Este contraste estuvo hermoso.
El mismo comienzo de la serie ya muestra que este no es un pueblo normal con costumbres comunes. El sentimiento tipo Silent Hill ya está ahí desde el principio, y me sorprendió ver que esta serie revela la gran amenaza en la primera escena. Este no suele ser el caso, pero me gustó de que fuese de esta manera porque pensé que eso significaba que el resto de la temporada se trataría de explorar los orígenes detrás de esta amenaza paranormal, sin embargo, este no fue del todo el caso.
Pero por cierto, cuando hago una comparación con Silent Hill, es principalmente por el hecho de que la amenaza paranormal no persigue a una sola casa, persona o familia, sino a todo el pueblo. Además, la ciudad también tiene un tipo de evento siniestro diario que es similar a lo que sucede en Silent Hill.

I wondered why these people didn't simply leave this place to have normal lives elsewhere? I guessed there was an important reason that kept them in this place but this wasn't revealed until later in episode 1 when a very unlucky family ventures into this haunted town and suddenly leaving appears to be something impossible to achieve for them. This aspect of the town was also similar to how Silent Hill works.
The Sheriff of this small town is the person in charge of making sure no one remains outside their houses when nighttime begins, he is considered the general leader and is usually in charge of everything that needs to be done.
The mystery behind the paranormal events taking place in this town intrigued me a lot since the beginning of the show, but I did wonder if the creators were going to be able to provide an original enough explanation for this. Sadly, this season didn't provide enough answers for my taste.
These paranormal events can be considered scary so I would categorize this series as belonging to the horror genre. I make this clarification because I have noticed in recent times there are many productions being labeled as horror when they should be rather labeled as mystery or suspense. From is a proper horror show with many creepy moments that were very well done and designed to scare the viewers.
One weak point I can think of is the performance of the cast members playing the unlucky family that arrives in the town in episode 1. Especially the performance of the mother, who was played by the actress Catalina Sandino Moreno, and the daughter, played by the actress Hannah Cheramy.
Their performance wasn't entirely bad, but it could have been more convincing and authentic.
Given the fact this is an isolated town, I wondered how they managed to have so much food since no commerce was done with anyone outside the town. They should have had huge farms and many animals but this was never shown properly and this doubt remained with me throughout all of the season. They weren't hungry people and they even had a dinner serving many people. They did show a goat in one of the later episodes though.
I would have liked more information about how these people managed to sustain themselves, everything about it was a mystery, and even their electricity service worked in weird ways. I would have also like to know the reasons for dividing their town into 2 groups of people. You see, part of the population lived together in a big house they called Colony House, and the rest of the population lived in what they called "the town", which had normal buildings and houses. I wondered why they had this strict division, they got along with everyone but this division in their organization was clear.
Me preguntaba por qué estas personas simplemente no dejaban este lugar para tener una vida normal en otro sitio. Estos eventos paranormales pueden considerarse aterradores, por lo que clasificaría esta serie como perteneciente al género de terror. Hago esta aclaración porque he notado en los últimos tiempos que hay muchas producciones etiquetadas como de terror cuando más bien deberían ser etiquetadas como de misterio o suspenso. From es un verdadero espectáculo de terror con muchos momentos espeluznantes que fueron muy bien hechos y diseñados para asustar a los espectadores.
Un punto débil que se me ocurre es la actuación de los actores interpretando a la desafortunada familia que llega al pueblo en el episodio 1. Especialmente la actuación de la madre, que fue interpretada por la actriz Catalina Sandino Moreno, y la hija, interpretada por la actriz Hannah Cheramy.

Dado el hecho de que este es un pueblo aislado, me preguntaba cómo se las arreglaban para tener tanta comida ya que no se comerciaba con nadie fuera del pueblo. Deberían haber tenido granjas enormes y muchos animales, pero esto nunca se mostró correctamente y esta duda permaneció conmigo durante toda la temporada. No eran gente hambrienta e incluso tienen un restaurants sirviendo a muchas personas. Sin embargo, sí mostraron una cabra en uno de los episodios posteriores.
Me hubiera gustado tener más información sobre cómo estas personas se las arreglaban para mantenerse, todo era un misterio, e incluso su servicio de electricidad funcionaba de manera extraña. También me hubiera gustado saber las razones para dividir su ciudad en 2 grupos de personas. Verás, parte de la población vivía junta en una casa grande que llamaban Casa Colonia, y el resto de la población vivía en lo que llamaban "el pueblo", que tenía edificios y casas normales. Me preguntaba por qué tenían esta división estricta, se llevaban bien con todos, pero esta división en su organización era clara.

There is a lot going on in this town and even the people who live there are kind of lost about all of the mysteries. They are only aware of the nocturnal monsters because these are obviously a huge threat to them, but they aren't aware of anything else.
For a while, I thought this place could be some type of limbo or some macabre punishment or torture from a super-advanced being wanting to mess with these poor people.
Some of the characters, especially the new arrivals, also begin to question the nature of this place, and the reason for their own presence. Frustratingly for them, there are no easy answers, only more questions and weirdness... and monsters of course.
From was a very entertaining horror show that despite making use of ideas already existing in previous productions, it presents us with a nice overall development and a good little twist for this type of horror.
For me, horror is the genre most difficult to do properly and bad horror runs the risk of being funny instead of scary. This series was very enjoyable and I think if this was a Netflix series it would be much more popular. It clearly deserves to have more attention.
I would bet most people who enjoy the horror genre will have a nice time watching this show. And as a big fan of horror, I really like to see this type of story being produced. I have thought for quite a while that the horror genre tends to lack an abundance of high-quality productions and little-known series such as this one help mitigate that lack of quality.
If you are the type of person who wonders if you locked your front door when you are already on your bed ready to sleep, then that thought will probably be more intense after watching this series.
Están sucediendo muchas cosas en esta ciudad e incluso las personas que viven allí están un poco perdidas acerca de todos los misterios. Solo son conscientes de los monstruos nocturnos porque obviamente son una gran amenaza para ellos, pero no son conscientes de nada más.
Por un tiempo, pensé que este lugar podría ser una especie de limbo o algún macabro castigo o tortura de un ser súper avanzado queriendo meterse con esta pobre gente.
Algunos de los personajes, especialmente los recién llegados, también comienzan a cuestionar la naturaleza de este lugar y el motivo de su propia presencia. Frustrantemente para ellos, no hay respuestas fáciles, solo más preguntas y rarezas... y monstruos, por supuesto.
From fue un espectáculo de terror muy entretenido que, a pesar de hacer uso de ideas ya existentes en producciones anteriores, nos presenta un buen desarrollo general y un buen giro para este tipo de terror.
Para mí, el terror es el género más difícil de hacer correctamente y el mal terror corre el riesgo de ser divertido o gracioso en lugar de dar miedo. Esta serie fue muy disfrutable y creo que si fuera una serie de Netflix sería mucho más popular. Claramente merece tener más atención.
Apuesto a que la mayoría de las personas que disfrutan del género de terror pasarán un buen rato viendo este programa. Y como gran fanático del terror, realmente me gusta ver que se produzca este tipo de historia. He pensado durante bastante tiempo que el género de terror tiende a carecer de una gran cantidad de producciones de alta calidad y series poco conocidas como esta ayudan a mitigar esa falta de calidad.
Si eres el tipo de persona que se pregunta si cerró con llave la puerta de su casa cuando ya estás en la cama listo para dormir, entonces ese pensamiento probablemente será más intenso después de ver esta serie.
