Backlinks are basically votes from other websites. These votes tell the search engines like Google how valuable the content is.

In other words, these backlinks tell the search engines about the credibility, usefulness of the content and how valuable it is.

That means, the more votes your content/ website have, the higher is a chance that your content or website will rank better in Google and other search engines.

Use of links in search engine algorithm is not something that is new. It is said that backlinks formed the foundation of Google's original algorithm (called as PageRank).

Even though, Google has made a bunch of changes to its algorithm, backlinks still remain a key ranking signal.

According to a study, Google confirmed that backlinks is still one of their three most important search engine ranking factors.

If you still are wondering what backlinks are, *backlinks or inbound links are the links from one website to a page on another website.

These backlinks are considered as votes for a specific page by Google and other major search engines.

This is why pages with high number of backlinks tend to have good ranking in search engines.
