The crypto dust is a small amount of crypto that is sent to a large number of wallet addresses with the malicious or benevolent purposes.
General, dust is considered the amount of crypto that is equal to or lower than a transaction fee.
For example, Bitcoin has a dust limit of around 546 satoshis or 0.00000546 BTC. Such a limit applied by wallets may not allow transactions equal to or below this limit.
A small amount of crypto left after a trade as a result of transaction fees or rounding errors could also be a dust. This small amount is not tradable but can be converted into exchange's native token.
Crypto dust shouldn't be posing a significant threat as it has been mainly used for purposes that are legitimate like for example sending a small amount to someone for advertisement purposes.

The dust attack is something when a small amount of crypto is sent to multiple crypto wallets by malicious actors.

As the blockchain ledger is transparent and traceable as the all the transactions are visible to everyone meaning that a user's activity could be tracked down following the history of that address.
When a dust is transferred to a crypto wallet, the hackers try to invade the privacy of the owner by tracking down their funds when they move their funds from one address to another.
The purpose of the hacker is to identify the victim through off-blockchain hacking activity when the victim unknowingly sends dust to an off-blockchain centralized platform. And if the centralized platform complies with KYC, it may store victim's personal data becoming vulnerable to phishing and other threats.
The crypto community needs to get educated on the matter with due diligence to tackle these attacks.
