Is Turkey A Democracy?
If Turkey is still a democracy, or not, is a long-long dispute in the last years. But today we have new information. “Turkey’s President Suffers Stinging Defeat in Istanbul Election Redo” – wrote The New York Times today. And then: “President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey suffered the biggest defeat of his political career on Sunday as his candidate for Istanbul mayor conceded defeat”.
But his party is trying to take advantage of the disadvantage. Because many Western opinions were claiming in the last years “Turkey's democracy is dying”. Or, at least, it was under threat. President “Erdoğan's government has been accused of democratic backsliding and corruption” (Wikipedia).
Today, the ruling party is saying, that was a test of Turkey’s democracy, and this democracy is alive and well. Because the rulers can clearly be defeated. How do you feel? What do you know? Is Turkey still a democracy, or not?
