Well, what's the measure of having it "take off" specifically? As far as horror franchises go in the modern age, I'd say it's doing pretty well. Scream 6 and Scream 5 both were well received critically as well as with audiences. If we double the budget of the films to account for advertising costs, then they still more than doubled their money and profited heavily. Scream 5 was dropped during January when everything is just Fuck you it's january movies and did great. This movie dropped during March, a very middle of the road time to put out a movie and still also did great. The Franchise as a whole has been profitable through each movie.

And, popularity wise Scream is a pop culture icon for sure. Hence why you can find a shit ton of references, parodies and transmedia of Ghost Face or the movies in general. If we're just talking sheer popularity and box office draw in comparison to modern films as a whole, I don't think any modern horror franchise is going to have the same kind of take off as something like the Marvel universe, or some huge blockbuster spectacle like Top Gun Maverick. And, that's just because horror is a niche film genre for people. Half of my friends and family refuse to even watch horror movies, or will walk out of the room if they do give it a chance if it has gore.

The only time people seem to really want to check out horror movies is during Halloween, and they will literally watch any hot garbage as long as it's spooky season. Hence why we get god awful Saw movies, terrible Paranormal Activity movies, etc.
