Yeah, I can think of quite a few metroidvania style games that I enjoyed in recent times. I'm planning on trying out Hollow Knight sometime soon, heard nothing but fat boners and wet clits about the game since it came out.
Also, that is very true. But, as long as you can put a spin on it, I think it's fine to take elements from previous entries in that genre. A Hat in Time was very heavily inspired from Mario 64 and other old platformer games, but it's pretty nice anyways because it has an entertaining little story and a nice art style/aesthetic to it with pretty normal gameplay controls.
