I've always wanted to build a house with a large atrium that I could build either one giant bio dome type system or several smaller such systems filled with creatures living in a mostly self sustainable environment. I would have birds, reptiles, small plant eating mammals, and a fish pond. There would be fruit producing trees and shrubs, there would be locations for the hatching of such things as your crickets, and it would allow enough access so that pollinating insects could enter and exit without allowing my menagerie escape. Then when I wanted to spend a day, or night, in nature I could simple walk into my atrium and sit on a bench or use a hammock and enjoy the sights and sounds just as if I were visiting some remote wilderness area.
