Great article. And sad we have to even deal with these things, but it is a part of the life we lead. As in just being a human in today's world. I'm a guy, but as you say, not immune to this either.
I ride on a riverside bike lane for exercise, and have had some strange and scary run-ins over the years. That's why I've quit riding as much late at night. Everything from people throwing things out of cars at me, to guys yelling at me about too-bright lights, to one coming my direction with a machete. Scared the daylights out of me. Luckily he just kept on walking as if I wasn't there. Used to carry pepper spray, but it's illegal here now. I do carry a knife on my bike, for whatever I may need it for on a ride. Cutting my power bar so it fits on my stale bread? ( :
But your ideas are very helpful and are good to put out for folks that want to take up/ continue running, exercising, etc. It's not fair anyone has to deal with it, but also ridiculous to not be able do what you want to do. As you say, it helps to use your head. There is only so much prep you can do, in all parts of daily life. But doing it as smartly as possible goes a long way toward safety. Enjoy the runs, and stay safe.
