What's buzzing, friends!
If you're like us, then you love pie! Whether it's a savory pie or a dessert pie really doesn't matter; as long as it's pie, you have a little smile. When did it become acceptable to eat pie for every meal? What makes pie so much better than any other dessert out there? Why do we like pie so much? These are all important questions about pie, but today we are talking about the first 15 digits of the 3.141592653589793 pi.
The first 15 digits of Pi is what NASA uses for calculating interplanetary travel. With the first 15 digits, they can figure out the size and position of things down to small fractions of distance. Here is a great quote by the director and chief engineer for NASA's Dawn mission, Marc Rayman.
It turns out that our calculated circumference of the 25 billion mile diameter circle would be wrong by 1.5 inches. Think about that. We have a circle more than 78 billion miles around, and our calculation of that distance would be off by perhaps less than the length of your little finger. Sourece
WOW. That is amazing. What gets even more wild is, if you use up to the 40th digit of Pi, you could figure out the circumference of all we see in space - the total visible universe - down to the error threshold of about an atom of hydrogen. Now that's math for you!
Sometimes, things just add up when you add in Pi. We recommend you grab a slice of your favorite pie and read this week's update from D.Buzz below. Then you can go off to measure the circumference of reality. :D
