I’d argue Orwell is invoked so often precisely because our culture has lost its appetite for nuance and prefers black-and-white thinking. His work is easy to flatten into a simple good-versus-evil slogan. Most people who quote him endlessly haven’t actually read him at all! Ironically, Orwell has become a mascot for people who don’t think critically at all, but instead echo whatever their preferred influencer or political pundit tells them to say.
