I don't know that any level of control will do anything except piss off the other side. Look at Twitter: for years they tried to control misinformation and banish people who routinely spread it. While the most direct effect was it was a more pleasant and less hateful place to be, another effect was it lead to so much anger and hatred on the other political side, that as soon as Elon bought the place and opened the gates, it immediately sprang to the other side, where it now almost embraces misinformation and promotes people who spread it. Any kind of control, no matter how well-meaning, might have a similar effect. I put the blame for this mess squarely on the algorithms. They use and abuse human nature to deliberately get us riled up. Of course the intention is just to make us keep looking so they can get those ad dollars, but the indirect effect is... all this mess. Those algorithms are what need to be regulated. ...but I'm sure any effort to do so will just piss off another group. sigh... I'll go sip my tea in peace and try not to think about it.
