Yeah, comics. Jack Kirby created most of the early Marvel universe. Then Stan Lee got jealous and kind of used his influence to force Kirby out (it was more complicated than that, though). Kirby went to DC and did some great work with Superman, then DC gave him free rein to create his own books. He created the New Gods. It was a super complex mythology, almost comparable to Tolkien. If you ever watched one of the later seasons of Superfriends as a kid, you probably remember Darkseid. He showed up as the big baddie there a lot.
