I've heard about that from some of my German friends. It could be the same in Japan, absolutely. I mean, we saw that same thing in the generation that grew up during the Depression, right? They tended to be very frugal, yes, but they also tended to never throw anything away, so they ended up with houses full of junk. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was a factor in Japan too, especially with those who grew up in the years following WWII when Japan was in ruins.
