I catch it sometimes in the middle of ordinary things. Making a mistake at work and the internal response arriving immediately, sharp, unkind, in language i would never use toward someone else in the same situation.

I dropped something recently, genuinely just dropped an object, and the thing i said to myself in that split second would have been recognisable as unkind if i had said it to another person. Over a dropped object. The automatic unkindness was so fast and so habitual i almost missed it.

Most of us have a running internal commentary that we have never examined as closely as we should. It arrived gradually, assembled from critical voices in our past, from environments where we learned that self criticism was just diligence, from cultures where being hard on yourself was confused with having standards.

And because it is internal, because nobody else hears it, it escapes the scrutiny we would apply to anything said out loud. We would notice immediately if a friend spoke to us the way we routinely speak to ourselves. We would name it as unkind, as disproportionate, as not the way you treat someone you care about.

But we do it to ourselves in the space between every moment and somehow that does not count.

It counts. It shapes everything. The constant low level unkindness in how you narrate your own experience creates a relationship with yourself that is undermining in ways that are hard to see from inside it. It contributes to the difficulty of taking risks, of recovering from mistakes, of believing you are capable of things before you have proof.

You do not have to perform relentless positivity at yourself. That is its own kind of dishonesty. But there is enormous space between brutal self criticism and false cheerfulness that most people never inhabit because they never thought to try.

Talk to yourself like someone you are responsible for caring for. Because you are.
