I stayed somewhere for two years past the point it made sense because i felt i owed it loyalty. Not a person, a situation. A commitment i had made to myself at a time when i had less information than i had now. And the idea of walking away from it felt like a failure of character rather than a reasonable response to changed circumstances.
I confused loyalty with stubbornness and suffered the difference quietly for longer than i needed to.
Loyalty is a genuine value. It matters. The willingness to stay with something or someone through difficulty, to not abandon ship the moment things get hard, that is worth something real. But there is a version of loyalty that becomes a trap. That uses your own sense of integrity against you by reframing leaving as betrayal even when leaving is the only honest move available.
Not everything deserves your ongoing loyalty just because it once did. People change. Situations change. You change. The version of you that made a commitment existed in a different context with different information. Honouring a past version of yourself at the expense of your current reality is not integrity. It is just refusal to update.
I have also seen this in relationships. People staying in situations that have clearly run their course, that are costing everyone involved, because they told themselves loyalty required it. Because leaving felt like giving up or failing a test of character.
But sometimes leaving is the honest thing. Sometimes the most loyal thing you can do to yourself and to the other people involved is acknowledge clearly what is true rather than maintaining something false out of obligation to a past decision.
Loyalty should be directional. Toward people and values and commitments that are genuinely worth it. Not toward situations that have simply accumulated enough of your past investment that leaving feels like waste.
Know what actually deserves your loyalty. And know the difference between staying because it is right and staying because leaving feels hard.
