I Learned More From the Things That Did Not Work Out Than From the Things That Did
The successes in my life have been good to me. They gave me confidence, momentum, proof that certain approaches worked. I am grateful for them. But if i am being completely honest about what actually taught me the most, it was not the things that worked out.
It was the job that did not. The relationship that ended badly. The project i was certain about that fell apart in the most instructive way possible. The opportunities i missed and the decisions i made from the wrong place that cost me something real.
Those things taught me in a way success simply cannot replicate. Because success tends to confirm what you already thought and leave your assumptions intact. Failure interrogates them. It asks you to look at what you believed would work and explain why it did not. It forces a level of honest self examination that comfort rarely demands.
I have met people who have been reasonably successful without encountering significant failure and there is often a brittleness in how they handle uncertainty. Not because they are not capable but because they have not had the kind of experience that teaches you you can survive things not working out. That failure is not the end of the story. That you can lose something real and still be standing afterward with useful information you did not have before.
The things that did not work out gave me that. Not comfortably and not at the time. But looking back they contributed more to understanding myself and how i navigate the world than most of the things i would have pointed to as wins.
I am not grateful for failure in some performative way. Some of it genuinely hurt and i would have chosen different if i could have.
But i am honest about what it gave me. And i try not to waste it by drawing the wrong conclusions about what it meant.
