The message where i grew up was not subtle about this. Men did not cry in public. Problems got handled quietly. Needing help was something you kept private if you could not avoid it entirely. Strength meant not showing the thing that was hurting you, especially not to anyone who might use it against you later.
I absorbed all of that without deciding to. Just grew into it the way you grow into the language spoken around you before you are old enough to choose your own.
And for years it worked in a surface level way. I was reliable. Held it together in situations where other people fell apart. People described me as strong and i accepted that as a compliment without examining what it was actually costing me underneath.
What it was costing me was depth. Real closeness with people i cared about. The ability to actually receive support when i needed it instead of insisting i did not. A relationship with my own emotional life that was honest rather than managed and performed for everyone's comfort including my own.
The irony of performing strength constantly is that you end up alone inside it. The very thing you think is protecting your relationships is actually keeping real intimacy out. Because real closeness requires letting someone see that you are not okay sometimes. And if you can never show that, people are only ever close to the version of you that has it together. Which is exhausting to maintain and ultimately very lonely.
I did not unlearn this overnight. Still catch myself doing it sometimes, defaulting to fine when something more honest is available. Old wiring does not just disappear because you understand it.
But i have had conversations in recent years that would not have been possible if i had stayed inside that old pattern. Moments of real connection that only happened because someone saw me struggling and i let them see it instead of immediately covering it over.
Vulnerability did not make me less. It just made me reachable. And being reachable, it turns out, was the thing i had been needing all along.
