There is a decision i made at twenty six that i carried around as evidence against myself for years. Not something illegal. Not something that harmed anyone else in a dramatic way. Just a choice i made from a version of myself that was scared and not thinking clearly, that cost me something real and cost someone else something too.
I apologised to the other person. Genuinely. That part was important and i did it as honestly as i could.
Forgiving myself took much longer. Years longer. And in the gap between those two things, that unresolved self judgment quietly shaped a lot of my behaviour in ways i did not fully see at the time. I worked harder than necessary trying to compensate for something i had never fully let go of. Took on responsibility that was not mine to carry, partly because i felt like i owed a debt i had not finished paying. Made myself smaller in certain situations because somewhere underneath i still believed i had forfeited the right to take up space after that one decision.
Self forgiveness is the part the conversation about forgiveness almost never reaches. We talk about forgiving other people, about releasing what they did and not letting it define us. But what about the things we did. The moments we were not who we wanted to be. The times we chose badly or acted from our worst self or caused damage we wish we could undo.
Those things deserve examination and honest accountability. But they do not deserve to become permanent definitions of who you are. You are not the worst decision you ever made. Not the worst version of yourself that showed up in a difficult season. Not the thing you did before you knew better or before you had the tools to do differently.
The person you are becoming is built partly from learning those things. But it cannot be built well if you are still standing on a foundation of unresolved shame about who you used to be.
Forgive yourself. Not to escape responsibility. But to actually move forward from a place solid enough to build something real on.
