In 1986, a group of US researchers found in a Swiss lake some bacteria that seemed able to produce toluene, a key component of the fuels we use nowadays. Now, with in-depth studies, we have managed to understand how this is possible.
The first attempt consisted in cultivating these bacteria in petri dishes, but it failed. For this reason, the focus shifted towards identifying the group of genes responsible for the toluene production. Once the group was selected, the candidates were engineered in bacteria that are easier to culture (E. coli) until they found specific ones.
Therefore, it’s understood that, probably, toluene is produced as an intermediate of the electrons transport chain necessary for the production of ATP and, potentially, it can also be used as a defense strategy, as it’s toxic to other organisms.
The possibility of growing bacteria with this capacity opens the door to interesting future scenarios, as they could be exploited for the creation of organic fuels; but in order to make these mainstream it will be necessary to reduce the costs of the various processes necessary for their creation.
a new hydrogel for the treatment of diabetic wounds
In patients with diabetes, hyperglycemia is associated, as well as other characteristic of the disease, also to skin abnormalities, which can lead to a fragility of the skin that should not be underestimated. Severe cracks may also occur as a result of minor trauma.
A solution for a rapid healing of these wounds comes from Rice University, where the chemist and bioengineer Jeffrey Hartgerink exposed the promising results of the latest tests on animal models of diabetes mellitus. These studies, published on the American Chemical Society Journal - Biomaterials Science and Engineering, reported the effectiveness of the use of the hydrogel Multidomain Peptide, known as K2(SL)6K2. The use of hydrogel has led to a halving of the time required for wound care, compared to the hydrogel used in clinic practices.
The discovery was made by a team of NASA scientists. Using the historical data archive of observations, the data derived from space missions such as Voyager and photos from the Hubble Space Telescope it was possible to reconstruct the history of this storm. The dimensions of the Red Spot are currently comparable with the size of the Earth, while up to a century ago they were at least triple. Scientists believe that this storm could even completely disappear.
Today, @egotheist, with his post of the series “Debunk Tuesday”, show us the pseudoscientific claims that are at the base of the “energization” and “revitalization” of the Grander Water.

Questi studi, riportati sull’American Chemical Society Journal - Biomaterials Science and Engineering, hanno riportato l’efficacia dell’utilizzo dell’idrogel Multidomain Peptide, noto come K2(SL)6K2.
