Genetics vs education?

What influences how we behave and how we develop? What is more incisive our genetic makeup or the education we receive? According to scientists, the answer is probably a combination of both.

Although we have always been taught that our DNA is something fixed and immutable, recent studies by some researchers at the Salk Institute suggest that this is not the case. Although most of what we are is written in our DNA, it seems that other factors are equally important and that they could be transmitted to us in early stages of our lives. The stress to which mothers are subjected, the fears, the emotions can somehow be transmitted and remain etched in the genome of the offspring, altering, albeit in part, the final information. The research team conducted experiments on mice, demonstrating that by exposing the mothers to particular conditions, they obtained offspring with slightly different genomes.

Footprints!

Some Canadian scientists from Victoria University have discovered fossil footprints of 13 million years old human feet, imprinted in the sand of a beach on the Pacific coast.

29 footprints from single individuals were found imprinted in the sand, plus a series of partial footprints damaged by time. The discovery testifies unequivocally how at that time the first men moved from Asia to North America during an ice age. The two continents, in fact, were probably connected by an ice "bridge", and the American milder climate encouraged individuals to migrate.

Kaon decay

At CERN they may have observed the very rare decay of the kaone, a positively charged subatomic particle

Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - Source

It is only a first indication of a possible event, but if it was to be confirmed, it would be the umpteenth correct prediction of the Standard Model, the theory that describes the subatomic world. But, if the frequency of decay should be different from the expected one, then it would mean that some parts of the Standard model are incorrect, and this could be the first indication for a new theory better than the current one. One event does not make statistics, it will still take years of measurements.

Stabilizing Liposomes with Nanoparticles

Today vinamra@vinamra talks about liposomes, vesicles made up of phospholipids or cholesterols, which are usually used to carry drugs and antibiotics. Despite these molecules make the drugs delivering to targets more efficient, we are still far from perfection, but new researches aiming to engineer the liposomes with nano particles could reserve many surprises.

Genetica o educazione?

Cosa influenza come siamo, come ci comportiamo e come ci sviluppiamo?

Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - Source

Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - Source
