Today I presented my paper titled “Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Aquaculture for Food Security: An Imperative Review” at a conference, and it went better than I expected to the glory of God.
The morning started with a lot of preparation. I went over my slides again and again to make sure the flow was clear from the problem of global food insecurity, to how aquaculture can help, and then to the role AI is playing in making aquaculture smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable. This topic matters to me because feeding a growing population will require us to rethink how we farm fish and other aquatic species.
I arrived at the hall around 9am and I was present from the opening including when the welcome speech was given by the coordinators
. At exactly 10am the presentation proper started. I pulled up my seatbelt and watched others who were before me presenting and truly,I learned so many new things. When it was my turn, I walked up in front of an audience of researchers and academics
. At first there were butterflies, but once I began explaining how AI tools like sensors, machine learning, and predictive models are being used to monitor water quality, detect disease, and optimize feeding, I found my rhythm. I was confident about every section because I had lived with this research for weeks
.
The question and answer session was what I was most curious about
. I got some tough questions about data availability in developing countries, the cost of AI adoption for small-scale farmers, and the ethical side of automation in aquaculture. I was able to answer them by drawing from the different case studies I reviewed. That part felt good. It showed me I didn’t just compile papers, I actually understood the gaps and opportunities.
By the time I stepped down, I felt a huge sense of relief. The feedback was positive, and a few researchers came to talk to me afterward about possible collaborations and future directions for the work.
Presenting today reminded me why reviews like this are important in growing aquaculture. AI is not just a tech buzzword in aquaculture, it could be the difference between waste and efficiency, between scarcity and food security. I’m proud I got to share that message, and I left the conference motivated to push this research further.
