Hello hivians. I hope we are good 👍.
This morning when I went to my garden to water my pepper nursery, I heard Krok Krok Krok sounds.
I looked down and saw them. Big frogs, sitting comfortably in the middle of my wet nursery pepper leaves, looking at me like they paid rent.
At first, I wanted to chase them away and then I remembered that these frogs are my friends.
Let me tell you why frogs are important to me as a farmer.
Many people see frogs as dirty or scary. But for us small farmers, frogs are free farm workers.
Firstly, frogs eat insects.
Those frogs you see eats mosquitoes, crickets, grasshoppers, and other insects that would have eaten my young pepper leaves. One frog can eat up to 100 insects in one night.
That is more than any chemical I can buy.
Secondly, frogs tell you your soil is healthy.
Frogs only stay where the environment is not poisoned. If you see frogs in your farm, it means you have not over-used chemicals. Their presence means my soil is still alive.
Again, frogs are part of nature's music.
In the evening after rain, when all the frogs in the nearby bush start croaking, it gives a kind of peace, though some people finds it disturbing. The sounds reminds you that you are not farming alone.
Nature is farming with you.
Let me also inform you guys about my childhood memory with frogs.
Growing up, we used to hunt frogs after heavy rain. We would carry small buckets and run around. My mother would shout don't kill my time keepers!
don't kill my security guards!
I didn't understand then but now I do.
Now when I see a frog in my farm, I don't chase it. I just say good morning, Oga guard and I leave it.
Frogs may look ugly to some people, but in the ecosystem, they are very beautiful.
Do you have frogs in your area?
Do you see them as friends or enemies?
Are you scared of them?
Tell me your frog story in the comments.
