Crane Flies.
Know this, those big mosquitoes in your room are not mosquitoes.
They are crane flies.
You have seen it before? If no then see the image below.
They have long legs, big wings, flying clumsily around your room at night and everybody shouts see mosquitoes.
Yes, those creatures are not mosquitoes, but they are crane flies.
And they are not your enemies.
Let me now tell you things you should know about this creature.
- They don't bite.
That long beak you see is not for sucking blood. Adult crane flies don't even bite humans. Some don't even eat at all. They only live for a few days to mate and die.
- Those long legs break easily for a reason.
If you catch its leg, it will drop it and fly away. That's its defense.
Crane fly would rather lose a leg than lose its life.
- Crane fly babies help our soil.
Baby crane flies are called leatherjackets and they live in soil and wet areas. They eat decaying leaves and help break down waste.
They make the soil better.
So next time you see one in your room or varenda, don't kill it in anger.
Just open your window or door and let it fly out.
It's harmless.
It's just lost.
They get attracted to white light.
Have you killed one before thinking it's a mosquito?
