Hello fellow history lovers on HIVE :) Happy Birthday to... is about celebrating the birthday of a historical person, be it an artist, a politician, explorer or whoever.
Today's birthday child is: Raphael. Happy 539th birthday!!!
Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino was born on 6 april (or maybe on 28 march, but for this post, we'll take the 6 april) 1483 in Urbino, a city in eastern Italy ("da Urbino" means from Urbino).
He is one of the most famous painters of italian renaissance and is considered on of the greatest painters of all time.
His most famous work might be La scuola di Atene (The School of Athens)
He painted the fresco in 1509 to 1511, when he was 26 to 28.
It shows multiple ancient greek philosophers, inventers and others, most notably Plato and Aristotele in the middle. Other figures include Euclid, Zoroaster, Ptolomy, Protogenes, Archimedes, Epicurus, Parmenides and many more (obviously, some of these lived centuries a part and couldn't ever have been in the same room together. But Raphael took artistic licence).
It is located in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City, which Raphael decorated for pope Julius II.
Another of his famous works is La transfiguración, Transfiguration on which he worked until his death in 1520.
He died on 6 april 1520 (his 37th birthday which means that today is also the anniversary of his death). Historians know he died from a disease, but aren't sure which one.
