Greetings to all the travelers of this community.
I don't know if I have ever told you about the characteristics of the town where I live and my daily life takes place.
I know that I have told you some stories and described some places independently, but in a complete way, I think it is the first time.
First, I am going to establish the general coordinates of the municipality. I begin by saying that I live in the municipality of San Luis, Pinar del Río, Cuba. And I establish it this way because I know that San Luis, in the broad region of the Americas, there is quite a lot, and even here in Cuba, at the other end, in the East of the island, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, there is another municipality that is also named in the same way.
But this land of mine is located in the westernmost province of Cuban territory, more precisely in the southern part, in the coastal belly.
Historically, the municipality has been one of the most important of the country, because on its lands the best tobacco in the world is grown, according to professional and popular criteria, one of the most important lines of the national economy. But we are going to land and take a tour on foot and without much hurry through the urban area, which is the largest and most densely inhabited settlement.
I cordially invite you to this trip in geography, because I know you are going to love it. Since practically in the entire province of Pinar del Río you will not find a place like this: an urban environment with a predominance of colonial architecture and other dotted architectural styles that, since the last century, are the product of various circumstances that have led to it as part of the development of the town.
We begin by crossing the little bridge through which the town is officially accessed, after there, eight km back, you leave the Pan-American Highway or Central Highway. Because you don't pass through San Luis; You have to come to San Luis.
Once we have crossed the bridge, after a small esplanade that opens like a Y, we are greeted by the almost monolithic monument to the mothers, which also begins the wide promenade, guarded by a street on each side as it runs in a straight line from end to end of the town, with an almost perfect symmetry in its layout, only altered by the detail that there, by the funeral home, the streets do not coincide with that of the Hospitalito which is a few meters ahead; We are already inside the head town of this tobacco-producing municipality.
The urban area, from side to side, can be explored without much trouble in a few minutes; However, the other end is not visible, because, as the street is reached, it rises on a gentle slope that culminates in front of the San Joaquín parish on one side and the José Martí park on the other. Once there, it begins to descend with the same gentleness towards the other end, where it says goodbye to us with another sculptural work: the heroic-sized bust of Antonio Maceo.
The monument to the mothers and the bust on a high pedestal of Maceo are the only two sculptural and artistic works that can be seen on the wide and splendid promenade of Juana Romero street, or as everyone calls it: Real street.
The town, in an aerial view, must be —without the last minute extensions— a perfect rectangle. And as I already said, its layout is totally symmetrical.
One of the most emblematic buildings of this small country town is the Parroquia de San Joaquín, which we all simply call "Church". Its bell tower is the highest point in the town, from where you have a beautiful three hundred and sixty degree panoramic view of the lands that surround the town and much beyond.
Originally, this settlement was named San Luis de los Pinos. Other historians have tried to label it, but without much success, as San Luis de Vuelta Abajo.
It was founded, as was customary, near the San Sebastián River, which, in reality, compared to other rivers, is nothing more than a large stream. But hey, our river is small, but it is our river.
Basically, the buildings, except for a few more modern buildings, are single-story and high-strut, typical of the colonial architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
In recent years, the town has grown beyond its original layout, but it has not been integrated into the initial structure.
If you stand next to me, in the old parade ground, right between the municipal park and the church, and we look to the right and left, we have the complete vision of the town, entrance and exit. Both at the same distance from where we are observing them. Perfect symmetry.
But San Luis has many charms in store for you beyond the friendly and cordial treatment of its inhabitants, but you have to discover those for yourself (if you decide to leave the Pan-American Highway, eight km from the main town).
And I am waiting for you here.
Thank you for accompanying me this time.
