ENGLISH VERSION
My most sincere greetings to everyone in the community.
The swallows will return, the honeysuckle will return... But I never thought that the lines for chicken in my warehouse would return.
With the path this has taken (I mean, the social and economic situation in the country), where almost all the products we consume in our homes we have to purchase in new economic management markets, it is to be believed that we would no longer have the pleasure of reliving the experiences of the tumultuous lines at the neighborhood bodegas.
After six decades of tradition of waiting in lines, it is logical that it is always a custom among people and a generational culture of the phenomenon.
Speaking in good Cuban, no one can tell me stories about a line, since I was born (and it is not a metaphor) in front of the neighborhood store. And from my house, until they dissolved the neighborhood because it was marginal or unhealthy, I was able to see how people behaved at that social event.
Of course I was only a passive tailgater, but in development, my mother or my older brothers were in charge of that task. Later, with the responsibility of head of the nucleus, I had to directly assume that Creole function.
And from there to here I have seen and participated in all kinds of queues. We always had the hope that the aforementioned queues would one day disappear from our daily lives, but through a process of growth, where logical development would put us at levels in which acquiring basic resources was not linked to spending entire hours in an environment in which, in addition to losing time, we sometimes even lost neighborhood friendships, as a result of clashes, disagreements, misunderstandings and collective stress.
The swallows return. But the lines (at the winery) take a while to return.
Today one came back that was already announced, but that few believed: the chicken line. Or rather, to buy the chicken.
And he came back with the queue to buy the chicken!!
Well, all the ingredients of the "cola".
A queue that is respected cannot lack:
Those who voluntarily and altruistically orient themselves to stow the merchandise (guarantee of having priority when purchasing).
The typical queues, which tell you: "with me come ten more, ahh." And if anyone from the family shows up, I'm sorry. And you can assume that families and relatives appear.
Women who do not take the child out into the yard, and if the child (like today) has a cold, the better, because then someone says: "gentlemen, let it happen now, look at what the situation is!!" She walks by with the child and automatically calls the baby's grandmother to take care of him while she shops. 🤭😂😂
But how! Haha
The one who comes and says: "Alabao, my turn is gone. Has so-and-so bought yet? I was after him." Of course, so-and-so was never in line. 😂
The one who comes asking who is the last, and the two times he asks, suddenly brings out the impulsive person and says: "Ahhh. The last one doesn't appear! Well then I'm the first." And you know, that's where it was formed.
Today in my warehouse, after "so much time and so much storm", the chicken returned. And the queue that had disappeared returned, but not due to the logic of development that we all dreamed of, but rather due to the logic of scarcity and underdevelopment.
The queues were also active spaces to interact between people who, even living geographically close, daily life did not allow face-to-face contact. And every time one was put together, whether it was for the basic basket 🤔 or for other products 🦈🐔 (🐴🫎🐂), they took advantage of the opportunity to update themselves on the latest events that happened inside and outside the region.
Honestly, ordinary Cubans miss the lines very much, and not only because of tradition, custom or culture, but because in the end they represented the guarantee of access, in the most cheap, to alleviate a little of their daily needs.
This afternoon, my winery, which for quite some time, together with the winery, has been going from yawn to yawn, has been resurrecting that community spirit of the lines that comes almost from our ancestors.
Thank you for joining me for a while to buy the chicken. I mean, to buy the chicken. I mean, chicken thighs.
