Wez walked slowly through the cemetery while the melody continued to play; at that moment, with every step he took, one of the violin’s strings seemed to sound as if someone invisible were playing it. It was cold, the night was dark, and shadows lingered among the trees, but Wez didn’t stop and kept walking until he found the grave he had seen in the photograph. The name was faded, but there was a date and a small inscription: “Here lies one who was never completely forgotten.” Wez was still a little confused when the violin began to play again, this time louder.
However, there was something strange about it, because it wasn’t the musician who was remembering that song—it was the person buried there. Wez sat down and closed his eyes, and he had a vision of that square completely filled with people—so many people—and among them, a little girl who was playing, but the musician was constantly watching her. After that, he had another vision: the violinist was playing exactly the same melody, with no audience—only the girl, who was now walking and had become an adult woman—and the musician said, “This was the first song I learned for someone who wanted to listen to me.”
Wez opened his eyes, and in that moment he understood the inscription on the tomb: the violinist hadn’t forgotten the last person for whom he’d played—he’d forgotten why he’d played for her. Finally, the melody fell silent, for now it was Wez who would remember him, and as the strings stopped moving, the key he’d been keeping safe glowed. Sure enough, the shadows appeared and pointed toward the forest, where there was a yellow light, and Wez began to run—not to search for the musician, but to find what he had left behind. After running a great distance, the second mark on the key began to glow, for he had found the path.
