Pierre was scared, so he closed the case and left the cemetery, since now he had to go home and figure out what his grandfather had meant so many years ago—and the strangest thing was that he didn’t see the cat again that morning. When he got home, he set the violin case on the table and stared at it, realizing that behind those strings lay a story that someone had tried to hide for decades.
Pierre began searching through his grandfather’s belongings, opening boxes, looking through photographs, books, and some documents that had been stored away for years, until, in the last box, he noticed a black book. The young man began flipping through each page, where he discovered notes about music, places, and dates he didn’t recognize, but on the last page there was a drawing that surprised him greatly, since it first featured the same symbol of the violin he had seen at the cemetery, and in the drawing there were five small circles connected by a line, and next to them was a handwritten word: Elario; however, Pierre didn’t know what that meant.
At the end was the same phrase he had read—“Music remembers what the dead forget.” Pierre realized that his grandfather already knew that story and everything related to the violin; however, he still had to figure out why he had left that warning. In that same book was a photograph that looked as if it were from many years ago, but it was of the same cemetery, and the five graves appeared there—though they were not open. In addition, there was a group of people and a man with a violin—who was Pierre’s grandfather, as he recognized him. He turned the photograph over and found the phrase that read: “The fifth melody must never be played.” So his grandfather knew what happened there, and that was why he left the warning.
He found another photograph showing a sort of circle formed by five graves surrounding a central figure. Pierre read the notes and learned that long before that place became a cemetery, five musicians would gather there to play a melody that could awaken the memories of the dead. Pierre was frightened and remembered that that night in the cemetery he had heard five notes—and these weren’t just any five notes; they were the five parts of that ancient melody.
A few minutes later, a faint sound was heard in the house—it sounded like a string—yet the violin was still in its case. The sound grew louder, and that melody began to play. He also heard a meow—it turned out to be the black cat sitting in the garden. Its eyes were shining, and Pierre still couldn’t tell if that creature was simply an animal or if it was part of that story. But once again, it disappeared, and the young man was left with many questions: Who were those five musicians, really? Why had his grandfather been investigating the violin?
Pierre knew there was something more in that box, so he looked at the third photograph, where a phrase appeared that read: “When the cat appears, it means the melody has begun to resurface.” Pierre realized that his grandfather hadn’t left that warning to protect him from a mere instrument; he’d left it to prevent anyone from discovering what had been buried for centuries. Now he held the violin, the five notes, and the five graves in his hands, but he felt that the most important piece of the puzzle was missing, and Pierre was determined to find it before that melody ended on its own.
