Good morning everyone and welcome to this DIY apple planting post where today I am planting a Honey Crisp apple tree. We are making a plan to plant at least 2 trees every year that we're here. There are already 2 other apple trees on the property so they obviously do well here..
So step one was dig a big ass hole. Approximately 3 times the size of the bucket at twice as deep.
The soil here is pretty sandy so despite the Gospel according to Google I am amending the soil. I am adding some mushroom substrate from a local company here in Alamosa. Jackson was there to supervise but not to help.
Apple trees require good water and good drainage. So I inserted a piece of 2 inch PVC pipe into the ground and covered it with broken concrete and rocks. Then I filled the hole about half way and watered the hole.
Next was the tricky part, remove the tree from the bucket carefully. I chose to cut the bucket off. Then carefully remove the burlap from the roots and place on the rock.
Fill in your hole leaving a edge around the tree to hold the water in.
Finally stake your tree so that it grows straight and it's not affected by the huge wind gusts we get here. I drove 3 fence stakes in the ground. Then using wire and some spare garden hose I completed my job.
Now it's just a 2-8 year wait for it to begin producing apples.
