The SIG P226 is a full-sized, service-type pistol made by SIG Sauer, a Swiss-German firearms manufacturer and exporter.
It was designed for entry into the XM9 Service Pistol Trials, which were held by the United States Army in 1984 to find a suitable replacement for the aged Colt M1911.
It is chambered for the 9mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, and .22 Long Rifle cartridges. It uses the same basic design of the SIG P220, but was developed to use higher capacity, staggered-column magazines in place of the single-column magazines of the P220. The SIG Sauer P226 and its variants are in service with numerous law enforcement and military organizations worldwide.
A variant, the P226 Navy, now serves as the official sidearm of the elite U.S. Navy Seals. The P226 is a firearm that fits large hands and performs well in competitions.
