The Boer Boel is a large, mastiff dog breed developed in South Africa to guard farms and diamond mines. It has a short coat that sheds moderately but is easy to care for. The Boerboel is a tough breed unsuited to a first-time dog owner.
The dog has a height from 22 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weights from 110 to 200 pounds. The dog's coat can be cream, brown, tawny, red or reddish brown. Some have a black mask or white markings. Piebald and Irish pattern markings are also normal colors. The Boerboel’s skin is dark under the fur coat, a trait thought to help protect him from the hot African climate.
This dog was developed by 17th-century Dutch settlers in South Africa to protect their families, farms and livestock. The breed’s Mastiff heritage is shown by its wrinkled forehead; broad, deep muzzle; and large size.
The Boerboel is pretty agile for its large size and can be energetic, especially when young. Activities in which this breed tends to be good at can include agility, obedience trials, protection sports, rally, weight pulling and working stock. The Boerboel is best suited to a home with a closed yard. It should never be allowed to roam free.
These dogs were often a first line of defense against predators and were valuable in tracking and holding down wounded game during hunting. Boreboels are loyal but very protective of their owner's families.
