There isn't as much competition as there used to be but there are e-readers out there that don't try to force you into a particular company's ecosystem. The main alternative these days seems to be the Rakuten Kobo Clara BW. Sony used to make them and was in fact the first to use the e-ink display but apparently they have left the market.
