If you aren't willing to gift the amount of money in the loan or to pay it off yourself then you shouldn't be cosigning. It's not that you don't trust the friend or loved one that may be asking, it's just that you never no what life might bring to cause them to not be able to pay the loan, even if they have the best intentions.
