After the storms that's hit the UK over the past few days, this morning started out promising, I opened the blinds and the sun was shining, I quickly opened up my drone app as I wanted to get some aerial shots today, and low and behold it said that it was suitable to fly.
So, putting my battery on charge, I eagerly awaited.
As the morning went on, the weather closed in and we got hit with rain. It wasn't just a shower, but a full on rain storm.
I thought, I'm not staying in now I've got everything ready, so I put the camera and drone in the boot of the car and headed out.
I wasn't too sure on where I wanted to go and just played it by ear, due to the weather I decided not to travel too far and I ended up in the beautiful and ancient town of Tickhill, just over the border in Doncaster.
I do have a soft spot for this place, it's so picturesque, and also a busy little town. I must have travelled through here hundreds of times in my life, especially as a kid on our way on our summer holidays to Skegness, but it's a place that I'd never stopped at until a couple of years ago.
Years and years ago, Tickhill was once the second major town in the area, second only to neighbouring Doncaster, it even has it's own castle that is open to the public on odd days of the year (usually always falls on days that I'm working lol).
The following information is taken from Tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk
Because of its strategic position as “the gateway to the North” the Town is steeped in history and was a wealthy Saxon settlement and later, after the Norman Conquest, it further grew in importance with the building of a powerful castle (still occupied today) and St Mary’s church. Tickhill has grown and prospered, in the ensuing centuries, into the Town as it is today.
Walking down from the carpark near the church, it kind of reminded me of Whitby crossed with York, you could smell the fish cooking at the fish and chip shop, and as someone also had a coal fire burning, it really did smell like Fortunes kipper smoking shop in Whitby. Although I could have just eaten some fish from the chippy, I decided not to as trying to get back on my diet.
On the main road, there is a kind of bandstand in the middle of a junction, it looks great, what I also liked was that there was a lot of independently ran shops, and hardly any major brands in the town, which was great to see, you can't beat a home run business in my book.
I walked around the church hoping that is was open so I could have a look inside, sadly, it was all locked up, but what I did notice was quite a few grave stones that were broken, not sure if this was due the storms we've had on the old stones, or if it had been idiots going around the grave yard, not showing any respect. Who knows?
So it was just a flying visit today, all shots done using my phone due to the rain, I did enjoy this coffee though, even thought it was from a vending machine.
There's so much more to this town than in this post, they have a lovely mill pond that is abundant with wildlife, and much much more.
Hoping the weather will be better the next time I am off so I can get more of this lovely town in pictures.
Thanks for reading my blog, and I hope you have enjoyed this short post.
