Many crypto beginners still think that crypto assets are inherently dangerous. In reality, it's not the assets themselves that are dangerous, but often the way we store them that is flawed. The main key in crypto is not a "username / password." The main keys are your seed phrase and private key.
The Seed phrase is the 12 to 24 secret words that act as the master key to all the private keys within your wallet. Anyone who possesses your seed phrase can take all your assets, even if they don't have your phone or laptop.
So, the first rule is:
NEVER take a picture of your seed phrase, store it on your phone, or send it via chat / email
There are a few secure techniques for storing your seed phrase:
- Write it down manually on thick paper.
- Store it in two different physical locations (don't rely on just one piece of paper).
- Never store it digitally (no screenshots, no notes app, no cloud drive).
If you want an even higher level of security, you can store your seed phrase on a metal plate (a fireproof and waterproof metal backup). Many brands sell metal seed backups.
What about different types of wallets?
For beginners, I recommend:
• Software Wallets (Metamask, TrustWallet, Binance wallet): Use these for daily or small transactions. This type of wallet stores your private key on your device (phone/laptop), making it vulnerable if your device is infected with viruses or malware.
• Hardware Wallets (Ledger, Trezor, Keystone): Use these for long-term storage or large amounts of assets. The goal: Your Private key never leaves the dedicated chip inside the hardware device. So, even if your laptop/phone gets a virus, a hacker cannot steal the seed phrase/private key.
One final thing:
If you are new to crypto, never enter your seed phrase onto a website, even if the website looks exactly like your actual wallet. Many hackers create fake websites that look 100% identical.
