Hello everyone! π
Today I'd like to share an illustration titled "Setbacks," a piece inspired by those difficult moments we all experience at some point in life. Sometimes it feels as though circumstances are working against us and we're moving forward beneath a constant storm, but even amid obstacles, we continue pushing ahead, learning and growing through every experience.
I wanted to capture that feeling of silent struggle through a serious and reflective character, accompanied by a rainy atmosphere that reinforces the melancholic mood of the scene.
To create this illustration, I worked primarily in Manga Studio EX 4, developing everything from the initial sketch through advanced coloring and lighting. Afterward, I brought the artwork into Photoshop, where I applied the final adjustments that truly brought the composition to life.
ποΈ Step 1: Initial Sketch
Everything started with a quick sketch using blue lines. At this stage, I focus on capturing the overall concept by defining the facial expression, direction of gaze, and character posture. I'm not concerned with precision or details yetβthe goal is simply to establish a strong foundation for the rest of the artwork.
βοΈ Step 2: Base Line Art
Once the main concept was established, I created preliminary line art using red lines. This step allowed me to correct proportions, refine the facial structure, and improve the overall composition before moving to the final inking stage. It serves as an important bridge between the rough sketch and the finished drawing.
βοΈ Step 3: Detailed Line Art
With the structure defined, I proceeded to create the final line art, adding all the character's detailsβhair, facial features, clothing, and smaller elements that communicate their personality. My goal was to achieve clean and expressive lines that would give the illustration stronger visual impact.
π¨ Step 4: Base Colors
After completing the line art, I applied the base colors. During this phase, I assigned primary colors to both the character and environment, organizing each element into separate layers for easier manipulation in later stages. There are still no shadows or complex effects hereβthe focus is simply establishing the overall color palette.
π Step 5: Shadows, Lighting, and Details
With the base colors finished, I added shadows and lighting effects to create depth and volume. I also incorporated additional details throughout the hair, clothing, and background to enrich the visual quality. This is where the artwork begins to feel alive and the emotional atmosphere becomes much more apparent.
β¨ Step 6: Final Retouching in Photoshop
Once the work in Manga Studio EX 4 was complete, I exported the illustration to Photoshop for final touches. Here, I adjusted the overall lighting, refined the color palette to strengthen the cold and melancholic mood, and added the rain effect that defines the visual narrative of the piece. These adjustments helped unify all the elements and convey the feeling of facing life's setbacks more effectively.
π§οΈ Final Result
"Setbacks" represents those moments when the road ahead feels difficult and challenges seem endless. However, it also symbolizes our ability to keep moving forward despite adversity, finding strength even in the middle of the storm.
Thank you so much for joining me on this creative journey. I hope you enjoyed seeing the process as much as I enjoyed creating it!
