The space monks were inspired by the Vatican hats worn by bishops. There's a bus stop near my work, which advertises for the new CNN Pope miniseries. The tall hats worn by the bishops look like expressionless alien faces. At work, I drew them that way, but I gave the monks eyes to personalize them a little more.
