Here is why I don't work a day job. For me it was a night job because my skill set was bartending and waiting tables. Being in the restaurant industry, you're always going into work, when most people are coming out of work. So any social interaction you will usually have will be with other co-workers, usually at a bar after the restaurant closes. So by being in that environment, I developed a dependence for alcohol, which eventually lead to me being an alcoholic. It got to the point where I was drinking because I felt bad, but couldn’t really figure out why. I guess I justified it by telling myself that I needed to be grateful. When I finally decided to make the commitment to get sober, I knew I had to take myself out of that environment completely. Out of sight out of mind. The dedication to my sobriety meant that I had to find another way to make money. This wasn’t easy at first, I turned to the gig based economy. Door Dash, Postmates, Amazon Flex and Airbnb, to name a few. This sort of work isn’t the most reliable. Also when I was sobering up I had a revelation, that most of the things I was paying for, I didn’t need. So I downsized. I got so obsessed with it that I stopped getting hair cuts and clothes shopping. Honestly the stuff I owned I don’t miss. My freedom is priceless. Having less stress and more free time to get my passion back has cured me of alcoholism 1000%. And I will do all I can to hold onto that peace of mind.

If you really need a change and are willing to push through the dark times, the best days are still ahead. Don’t look at what you’re giving up, look at what you’re getting in return.
