Between 95' and 05' armies from nine countries and militias fought a war for control over the natural resources belonging to the DRC. The rangers that guard Virunga National Park put their lives on the line - in the last decade more than 150 men have been killed and abducted.

Today we went to the Senkwekwe Mountain Gorilla Orphanage to visit orphaned Gorillas that are being cared for in captivity.

In an earlier post I mentioned the guys from the documentary Virunga that risk their lives raising and protecting orphaned gorillas. Despite Rebels that threaten the whole area this incredible team stay put.

There's a possibility that the gorillas here will never be released back into the wild because it's too dangerous. It's almost certain that they'd be killed by poachers, and that they'd never be accepted into another Gorilla family.

The only chance of survival for these gorillas is within this safe and protected environment.

This little guy was rescued from a snare by one of the rangers. Unfortunately he lost his foot, but he's getting on really well here and has made friends with a little antelope who also lives in the park!

During the day the Gorillas are free to roam the protected forest area, but at night they are back in the safety of cages. I very luckily got a shot of one of the gorillas peering through its cage at night.
