One of the main tourist attractions for Cape Town is visiting Robben Island. Not only do you get one of the best views of Cape Town and Table Mountain on the way over, you also get to get a little insight into one of the most important places in South African history.
For 18 years Nelson Mandela was locked up here on Robben Island. The most overwhelming thing I took away was how bare the cell was, and how incredibly strong he must have been to survive.
Nelson Mandela's character grew whilst on Robben Island, and this was all without any view, without a proper bed, without a proper toilet, and without access to information or books.
Mandela famously came out of jail without a single bit of anger or need for revenge. He would become President Of South Africa and lead the dismantling of Apartheid in the country.
We got to see the Lime Quarry where Nelson Mandela was forced to work. Despite the hard labour it would be the only access to fresh air and partial views of Cape Town.
