Cocoyam (Colocasia esculenta)
Cocoyam are perennial plants belonging to the family of araceae which have fluffy leaves that can reach length in excess of three feet.The leaf blades are large and heart heartshaped that can reach 20 inches in length.Cocoyams commonly reach in the metre of three feet in height.even as they are perennials,they grow as annuals and are harvested after the season.
Benefits and uses
The corms can be dried And used to make flour or sliced and fried to chips
The leaves are also important of protein and vitamins.
In Nigeria,the igbo tribe the cocoyam tuber can be cooked or roasted and can be eaten with palm oil.In some parts in the igbo land the cocoyam are used to cook soups.
Nigeria is the largest producer in the world when it comes to cocoyam with the production of 5.49 million metric tonnes.

Note: The cocoyam has two species that are grown as food crops which are taro (Colocasia esculenta) old cocoyam and the Malanga (Xanthosoma spp) New cocoyam.
